Don’t buy into the whole “Gentle” and “Natural” marketing that is out there, especially when it comes to baby products. The majority of commercial products include ingredients that are potentially harmful to children (trust me, I’ve seen it). If you put it on your baby, chances are it’s being ingested by your baby. So, here’s a post for all of you who will be having babies, going to baby showers or hanging out with people who have babies. Get moms hooked on non-toxics!
THE CHOOSY CHICK
There’s a ton of baby products over at The Choosy Chick, probably because owner, Margot, has quite the brood of her own. Margot’s goal is to have a store that houses products with the purest ingredients for you and the fam. Here’s some of my picks:
Jack N’ Jill Bio Toothbrush I love these baby toothbrushes. Beyond the fact that they are utterly adorable, they are also compostable and biodegradable! Over a billion brushes are thrown away in the United States every year, so compostable is key. The handle is made with 100% corn starch. With rounded nylon, soft bristles they are superior at cleaning.
Farm To Girl Giggle Fest Sponge Wash cloths can become a sloppy, wet mess hanging around in the bath. This really soft sponge is perfect for wee newborns, babies and kids. They won’t mold, have no odor and contain no harmful chemicals…the perfect way to clean off baby! Eco note: farmed sustainably in the sea in Micronesia.
Peaceful Bubbles by Episencial’s This is a lavender/plum scented, non-toxic bubble bath for all ages. Kids love bubbles and these comfort the skin, are non-irritating, pH-balanced and safe for eyes. Made with moisturizing extracts, it calms and softens the skin, too!
Waxelene Oh, gosh, what doesn’t this do is a better question! Every new mother should be using this in place of Vaseline or any other conventional petroleum jelly. This won’t clog pores (unlike petroleum jelly) and is effective for dry skin issues like rosacea and eczema. My friends have been using this on their twins (per my suggestion) for an entire year and they have had ZERO diaper issues. ZERO. Can also be used all over the body and in the hair, too!
INTEGRITY BOTANICALS
Probably two of the nicest people you’d ever want to deal with are Terri and Marc of Integrity Botanicals. They’ve got such a great store and an amazing baby section (this is only the start of it, btw).
Zoe Organics You know, I’m just going to recommend the whole line. Yeah, that’s right, the ENTIRE line. You know why? Because I’ve tried so many of their products and they’re just that good. When I’m heading to a baby shower, I usually just buy a gift set of Zoe Organics. They’ve got nipple cream, diaper cream, baby oil, baby tea bath and their Everything Balm is wonderful (I’ve gone through two of them)…it’s just perfect for mothers.
CV Skinlabs Calming Moisture This is a wonderful cream for any age. A light lotion, it hydrates and calms the skin. It absorbs so quickly and can be used on everything from mama’s skin issues to cradle cap. I recommend keeping a tube of this in your purse and just using it for whenever your skin is dry or there’s any flare-ups of any kind.
CleanWell Hand Sanitizers Whenever I go over to visit a new baby, I spray some of this on my hands. Non-toxic, it sanitizes with the power of Thyme Oil, so it’s really pure. I have been using CleanWell for many years now and I keep the wipes in my car and in my handbag (just ask anyone who knows me). If you know someone having a baby, or have one yourself, this needs to be right near the crib or bassinet as people need to spray before they play!
MEOW MEOW TWEET POWDER
Baby Body Powder – Commercial baby powder has talc. Talc is no good. Straight up. Do not use it for yourself, or for your baby. This light powder smells wonderful and it absorbs moisture, leaving your baby chafe-free. The coolest thing? You can mix this with the baby balm and make a diaper rash cream…so smart! Vegan.
