It’s one thing to be all into this whole “green beauty” thing and it’s yet another for us all to commit ourselves to being part of the solution on this planet, rather than part of the problem. We can slather on all the pure lotions and potions that we want, have our wheatgrass everyday and chant “Om” until the cows come home, but the reality is that we need to start making changes that impact the planet. As much as I think brands need to start incorporating more eco and compostable packaging into their line-ups, I also think we need to step up and be greener in our own lives. These are some cool and easy changes to make.
TOOTHBRUSH + RAZOR
Ever try the Preserve toothbrush, shaver and tongue scraper? I’ve had the same Preserve shaver for over 6 years now. Yep. All I have to do is buy new blades. Can you just imagine how many shavers you’ve gone through within the course of 6 years? Ouch. I also have been using Preserve toothbrushes since I first heard about them. If you don’t know about them, you’ll love them. They are made from recycled yogurt cups and after you’re finished using yours, you can return it to Preserve to be recycled, yet again. How brilliant a concept!? They also have tongue scrapers (I have one in each bag).
PLASTIC-LESS FLOSS
Use Eco-Dent Floss. Why? Because it’s a great floss and the packaging is paper. That’s right. As many as 700 million plastic floss containers are discarded each year. It’ll take each of them about 700-1,000 years on average to decompose. Sad, really. Try this floss out. It’s also super economical with lots and lots of floss in there and it’s vegan. I’m a big fan for a long time.
ECO IN THE KITCHEN
One of my favorite brands is If You Care. They are a line of environmentally friendly kitchen and household products. They have unbleached coffee filters, aluminum foil made from 100% recycled aluminum, unbleached paper sandwich bags (goodbye plastic) and more. I love this brand and always throw my veggie and fruit peels in one of their compostable bags.
ENOUGH WITH THE PLASTIC STRAWS!
Treat yourself to a glass or stainless steel straw. Not only are they just gorgeous, but single-use plastic is totally irresponsible. In fact, the majority of us don’t even need a straw and it kills me every time that a drink I ordered reaches my table with one sticking out of it. Unless you really, really need a straw (and some people do) why bother? I usually request, “No straw” when I order and I bring my own glass straw. And I make sure to put it right back in my bag so I don’t forget it for next time. Have kids? Go for a bunch of the aluminum straws. Oh, and remember, everything tastes better when it’s not running through plastic, too!
WE DON’T NEED BAGS WHEN SHOPPING
Get yourself some nice reusable made from recycled plastic here. They’re so easy to stuff into your bag, too. They also have reusable gift bags (c’mon, that’s cool) and produce bags (so you don’t have to use the little plastic green bags while shopping for your fruits and veggies). Plastic bags are just flat-out irresponsible and we can do better. If we can remember our phones (and sometimes we can’t) then we can certainly remember to bring reusable bags.
